The Stone Age did not end because of lack of stones, but because better alternatives were found. The fossil fuel era will end when better alternatives are available. It’s happening now. We have the means, the technology and know what to do.
The technology is here . According to the UN, it is surprisingly cheap to transition to renewable energy and phase out the fossil fuel society. Renewable energy is still only marginal. We now must prepare for a rapid, exponential growth. Renewables should at least take 50% of the global energy mix by 2030. According to Bloomberg (2017), “by 2040, zero-emission energy sources will make up 60% of installed capacity. Wind and solar will account for 64% of the 8.6TW of new power generating capacity added worldwide over the next 25 years, and for almost 60% of the $11.4 trillion invested”. However, this will be far from enough to keep within the 2 degrees goal. To reach the Paris agreement and keep within 1,5 degree global warming, much more investments in renewable energies are needed.
If we fail, we are heading for irreversible impacts.

At the beginning of 2016, the fossil fuel industry faces an unprecedented crisis — from collapsing prices, a new global climate deal, and an ever-growing movement calling for change.
We have never had a better chance in history to break free from fossil fuels and build a just transition to clean and renewable energy.
Fighting climate change requires the courage to confront polluters where they think they are most powerful.
The world is becoming dangerously hotter by the day. Through peaceful direct action across the globe we can demonstrate to those in power that people everywhere are prepared to resist the fossil fuel industry’s plans to wreck the planet. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for. Let’s seize it. Breakfree2016
